Recently, I was asked to name the most influential people in my life whom I have actually met. Among the small handful I named, along with God and my spouse, I quickly named Pete.
I have had the privilege of being friends with Pete for more than twenty years. He is a man of immense faith, depth, integrity, and wisdom. Because of his genuine love and uncommon capacity for people, Pete is able to move with remarkable ease with the cultural and intellectual elites as well as the homeless and marginalized, offering the same attentiveness, dignity, and care in each place.
I have shared many domains of life with him. We have ministered together on stages, in therapy offices, and fishing boats. In all of these settings and more, I have witnessed Pete’s remarkable ability to join clarity of thought with generosity of spirit, helping people feel both deeply seen and wisely guided.
His presence is marked by a kind of unhurried strength, and his work consistently reflects seriousness without heaviness, depth without pretense, and conviction without coercion. His witness is not only in what he says, but in the kind of person he has become. He embodies a rare integration of brilliance, spiritual depth, and charity, and those who encounter him are often left strengthened, enlarged, and more awake to what is good, true, and beautiful. Pete is settled within himself because he is settled in his Lord, Master, and Friend, Jesus Christ.
I am proud to call Pete a brother in Christ and a very dear friend.
